Duminda shot Bharatha, latter’s driver tells CID

MP Duminda Silva shot presidential advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra with his pistol, the latter’s driver Saman Shantha Perera alias Bola Saman has told the CID in a statement.

The Colombo magistrate’s court was informed of this when additional magistrate Praharsha Ranasinghe today (Oct. 12) took up the Mulleriyawa gunfight case, which resulted in four murders.

The driver has told police that the MP had arrived with about 100 men in 20 vehicles.

Parliamentarian Duminda got down, came up to the presidential advisor and slapped him, then shot him with his pistol and shouted, saying “shoot Bharatha,” according to the statement.

The IGP ordered CID’s special investigation OIC Merrill Ranjan Lamahewa on October 08 to investigate the incident.

The OIC informed the court that constable Vithanalage Anura Thushara de Mel, a bodyguard of the MP and attached to Mirihana Police, shot the presidential advisor with a T-56 rifle.

The PC was arrested on October 10, and the driver Saman Shantha Perera has identified him as one of the persons who had shot the presidential advisor, the court was told.

Those who had accompanied the presidential advisor too, were armed.

The OIC informed the court that three others - Sherman Srimantha Kekulawala, Merl Frank Wijesinghe and Gayan Shashiranga Amaradeva - had given statements.

In his statement, Kekulawala has said that the policeman had shot the presidential advisor at close range.

On a request by the OIC, the additional magistrate ordered that the suspects be produced before an identification parade on October 18 and that they be remanded until then.
